Summer is nearly here and with it comes an annual tradition – the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri’s 5K fun run.

For the last three years the Club has hosted the Glow Run, inviting participants to a glow-in-the-dark run, but this year Club staff decided to change the theme.

Glow Run was a great event for us, but we decided that this year we’d like to do something a little different,” said Communications Director Emily Jarrett. “There are a ton of 5K’s locally for a lot of great causes and we wanted something that would stand out.”

The Hero Run encourages people to run as their favorite superhero, run in honor of a hero and run to be a hero to local children. Runners and walkers of all abilities and ages are invited to this family-friendly 5K, set for Saturday.

“In addition to this being a morning run instead of an evening one, we added a new age category for runners between 5 and 15,” Jarrett said. “We hoped to see a lot of Club families out and wanted to recognize those runners who may be younger. We also decided to include a medal for best costume – I bet we’ll see a lot of great superhero outfits on Saturday and I know the staff are looking forward to it.”

Registration will be open up until race time for the run, and there are still a few Hero Run T-shirts available for those who register early. This event is rain or shine.

“The Sedalia community has always supported Boys & Girls Club and the more than 2,000 kids we serve each year,” Jarrett said. “We hope to see a big crowd on Saturday, showing their love and support of our organization.”

The Hero Run is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., June 3 on the campus of State Fair Community College. Cost is $25 for those 16 and older; $10 for those 5 to 15-years-old and free for children under 4. Strollers are welcome. For more information call 826-8331 or go to www.bgckids.com/events/hero-run
